The companies said they were conducting investigations into their contracts to determine future relations with the software giant. However, a software analyst warned that it would be difficult for the companies to get out of the contracts as replacing SAP could prove difficult. “It’s not as easy as finding a replacement tomorrow because these guys (SAP) have a near-complete monopoly on software technology,” the analyst told Business Report on condition of anonymity. “So, for now, it will be a wait-and-see game.” SAP provides software solutions to the country’s top banks, businesses, state-owned entities and companies. Among its clients is Standard Bank, Nedbank, Pick * Pay and the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA). This week, SAP said it had initiated voluntary disclosure to the US Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on information it had assembled on the Transnet and Eskom contracts. At that time it was more about looking at what the interesting areas were where we could help utility companies reduce their costs and improve customer satisfaction by helping their customers manage their own costs. We did a number of projects on Smart Cities and smart utilities in Europe and Australia. Of course, along with the way, the opportunity was larger because IoT started to take shape, so we evolved the company along those lines and we started focusing around IoT initially in the residential space, and also in the enterprise space as well. I joined the company seven months ago and now we’re looking to grow the business in Asia Pacific. We want to see where the opportunities lie in the residential space and enterprise space, what partnerships we need to strike in order to be successful, things of that nature. Public-private partnerships are increasingly common, given the age of IoT where both parties are keen to leverage on the immense business and service opportunities with the development of IoT. With EDBI an STT as key investors in the company, what opportunities do you see in working closely with the public sector? Public sector projects, in general, tend to be quite large, especially in places like Singapore where the government is keen on making the concept of smart city all-pervasive. We have typically stayed away from large government initiatives because that’s the domain of large companies, like IBM, where you have very strong understanding of how the public sector works and how to manage those relationships. It’s waterproof, but it also supports Audible, if you have had a set of Bluetooth headphones or speakers handy. According to a listing on Amazon, it looks as though that functionality is coming to its cheapest Kindle model as well. According to the Kindle’s product page (via The Digital Reader), it will support Audible “in the coming months.” It looks as though it’ll do something similar to the Oasis: because the device doesn’t come equipped with speakers, users will have to pair the device with their own via Bluetooth. The page notes that the feature will be available as an over-the-air-update at some point in the near future. Unfortunately, it looks like it’ll only be the Oasis and basic model that will get the update: the Paperwhite and the Voyage don’t appear to support the feature. Amazon owns Audible, so integration between the Kindle and audiobook company makes quite a bit of sense, especially as audiobooks have taken off in popularity in recent years. Birmingham, Alabama, installed giant delivery boxes around town. And Stonecrest, Georgia, offered to rename itself Amazon. When you’re gunning to be the home of Amazon’s second headquarters, you “need something to set yourself apart,” said Nathan Bomey at USA Today. After the e-commerce giant announced in September that it was hunting for the perfect “Amazon HQ2” location, promising to invest $5 billion and create 50,000 high-paying jobs, 238 cities and towns eagerly threw their hats into the ring, with the application period ending last week. Some launched “downright wacky” stunts, while others dangled more traditional sweeteners, like the $7 billion in tax breaks offered up by Newark, New Jersey. If there are early front-runners for this “civic beauty pageant,” Amazon isn’t saying, said Matt Day at Seattle Times. But based on the company’s lengthy wish list — a population of at least 1 million, good mass transit, a well-educated labour force — analysts “have some guesses.” Moody’s Analytics crunched the numbers and named Austin, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Rochester, New York, as “best positioned” to win. Share this:The post Vying for Amazon’s new HQ appeared first on Statii News. from http://news.statii.co.uk/vying-for-amazons-new-hq/ Earlier this year I went to an event in Austin, Texas, billed as a sneak preview of the evolution of our species. The #Bdyhax Conference, which took place in a downtown exhibition complex, promised a front-row insight into the coming “singularity” – that nirvana foretold by science fiction in which biology and technology would fuse and revolutionise human capability and experience. The headline acts of the conference were mostly body hackers – DIY experimenters who, in their basements and garages, seek to enhance their own flesh and blood with biometric implants and cognitive enablers. These brave pioneers were extending their senses, overcoming the physical limitation, Dan-Daring themselves and the rest of us into the future. At least that was the idea. The reality of the convention was a little more mundane. It was overpriced and sparsely attended. Disparate and awkward groups of the pierced and the tattooed wandered between lectures about the ethics of body augmentation, and budget demonstrations of virtual worlds, past stalls flogging various kinds of neurotropic snake oil or enthusing over the transforming possibilities of magnets and LED lights inserted under the skin.
